2019 ASCA Award Category Descriptions 

ASCA Honorary Membership 

This award recognizes an individual who is retiring or retired from the field and has served ASCA as a founder, leader, presenter, volunteer, etc. who has contributed to the profession through participation in the Association.   

ASCA Distinguished Service Award 

This award is intended to recognize an individual for exceptional performance in service to the Association over time. Candidates for this award must be current members of ASCA. Nominees must be nominated by a current member of ASCA and hold a current membership in ASCA.

ASCA Graduate Student of the Year Award 

This award is intended to recognize a graduate student who has demonstrated excellence in the past year. Candidates for this award must be currently enrolled as a graduate student. Nominations must include the submission of a current job description and resume as well as a letter of support from a faculty member that conveys academic success and the nominee's primary function and successes as a graduate student or graduate assistant.

ASCA Undergraduate Student of the Year Award 

This award is intended to recognize an undergraduate student who has greatly contributed to his or her institution in the past year. Candidates for this award must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student. Nominations must include the submission of a current job description or description of leadership role related to student conduct administration/leadership (i.e. conduct board, peer review board, resident assistant, student worker, etc).

State Coordinator of the Year Award 

This award is intended to recognize a State Coordinator who has demonstrated exceptional communication and provided exceptional activities for their State. Candidates for this award must be the appointed State Coordinator for ASCA and a current member.

D. Parker Young Award 

This award is to recognize the outstanding ongoing scholarly and research contributions of an individual in the area of higher education and work of the profession. Nominees must be or have been a member in ASCA; have at least seven years of professional experience; and be nominated by a current member of ASCA.

Donald D. Gehring Award 

This award is intended to recognize an exceptional professional who has contributed significantly to the development of their campus, the field and professional organizations. Candidates for this award must be current or former members of ASCA and must have ten or more years of experience in work associated with the profession and be nominated by a current member of ASCA.

Innovation Award 

This award is intended to recognize an institution that has implemented an outstanding and innovative program related to the profession in the past year. (A “program” could be a specific program, assessment, process, etc.) Nominations must include a summary of the program being nominated (250 words max.).

New Professional of the Year 

This award is intended to recognize a new professional in the field who has demonstrated excellence in the past year. Candidates for this award should be assigned primary responsibility in the professional competencies overseen by ASCA, be a current member of ASCA, and have three or fewer years of full-time professional experience. Nominations must include the submission of a current job description and resume as well as a letter of support from someone who has worked with the nominee in a supervisory capacity within the last two years.

Award of Excellence - Individual

This award is intended to recognize a professional who has contributed significantly to the development of their campus, the field and professional organizations. Candidates for this award must be current members of ASCA.

Award of Excellence - Institution

This award is intended to recognize an institution that is engaged at the highest level and in the best practices.

Student Conduct Professional of the Year 

This award is intended to recognize a professional who has demonstrated excellence in the past year. Candidates for this award must have primary responsibilities in the professional competencies overseen by ASCA, be a member of ASCA, and have five or more years of full-time professional experience in an area related to the profession. Nominations must include the submission of a current job description and resume as well as a letter of support from someone who has worked with the nominee in a supervisory capacity within the last two years.

Dr. Felice Dublon Award of Excellence 

This award is intended to recognize a new professional who has recently transitioned from another area of student affairs, or someone who has transitioned from a primary student conduct role into another area of student affairs, and who has demonstrated excellence in the past year. Candidates for this award must be a current member of ASCA, must have less than three years of experience in their current role, and must have at least five years of professional experience.

Most Improved State of the Year 

This award is intended to recognize a State Coordinator who has significantly increased the level of service provided to their State in the past year. This can include increased levels of participation, increased programs/events/services offered to their membership, or more engagement by the state with the national organization. Candidates for this award must be the appointed state coordinator for ASCA and a current member.
